Custom Stand-Up Pouch MOQ, Lead Time & Printing: A Buyer's Spec Guide

If you're pricing custom stand-up pouches for the first time, two numbers decide whether the project is even worth starting: the minimum order quantity, and how long it takes to land in your warehouse. Here's the straight version from our production side.

Digital printing starts at 500 pieces. Gravure starts at 5,000. Sampling runs 3–5 days, and once you approve the proof, mass production is 7–15 days.

That's the short answer. The rest of this guide explains why those numbers move, where suppliers quietly add cost, and exactly what you should send a factory so the quote you get back is the quote you actually pay.

MOQ: why 500 and why 5,000

The gap comes down to one thing — the printing plate.

Digital printing needs no physical plate. Artwork goes straight to the press, so we can run a 500-piece batch without charging you setup. That's why digital is the realistic floor for a launch, a limited run, or a line with several SKUs.

Gravure (cylinder) printing engraves your design onto a cylinder. Making that cylinder is real work, so the order has to be large enough to spread the cost — typically 5,000 pieces and up. In return, the per-unit price drops noticeably as volume climbs.

Digital printing

Gravure (cylinder)

Minimum order

500 pcs

5,000 pcs

Plate / cylinder fee

None

Subsidized, scales with your order qty

Best for

Test runs, small batches, many SKUs

Steady repeat orders at volume

Unit cost trend

Higher per unit at low volume

Lower per unit as volume rises

One honest note: the gravure cylinder fee isn't a flat number we quote up front and forget. We subsidize it against your order quantity, so the bigger the run, the less that setup weighs on your unit price. If a supplier gives you a scary cylinder fee with no context, ask how it's treated on a repeat order — that's where the real cost shows up.

Lead time, broken down

Production windows and shipping are different clocks. Here's ours:

  • Sampling: 3–5 days. This is a physical pre-production sample made on the actual material, not a PDF mockup. You feel the seal, check the print, confirm the size.
  • Proof approval: you sign off. Nothing moves to mass production until you do.
  • Mass production: 7–15 days after approval.
  • Transit: sea or air, quoted separately. Customs clearance is on your side of the equation.

So a typical first order — sample approved mid-week — is in production within roughly two to three weeks of your initial inquiry, before freight. That's the number to plan inventory around; don't count the boat as part of the factory clock.

Digital or gravure? A simple way to choose

Pick digital if any of these are true:

  • It's your first order with a factory and you're de-risking.
  • You're testing a market or a flavor before committing.
  • You run several SKUs at low volume each.
  • Your total is under ~5,000 pieces.

Pick gravure if:

  • You already sell steadily and repeat the same design.
  • Unit cost matters more than flexibility.
  • Your volume clears 5,000 and you'll reorder the artwork.

The crossover point is where gravure's lower unit price covers the cylinder. Because we subsidize that cylinder by order size, the gap narrows faster than buyers expect — so don't write off gravure just because someone quoted you a four-figure plate fee elsewhere.

What to send a supplier for a real quote

Most "can you quote?" emails come back as a range, because they're missing the things that decide the price. Send this and you'll get a number, not a maybe:

1、Bag type — stand-up, flat bottom, 3-side seal, spouted, or vacuum.

2、Size — width × height, plus gusset depth if stand-up.

3、Material structure & barrier — e.g. PET/AL/PE for coffee, kraft/VMPET/PE for dry food. Tell us what's inside and we'll spec the barrier.

4、Net weight of the product — drives thickness and shelf-life needs.

5、Quantity — per design, per run.

6、Print — colors and whether you have print-ready artwork.

7、Finish — matte, gloss, soft-touch, foil stamping.

8、Features — zipper, one-way valve, window, hang hole, tear notch.

9、Destination market — decides which compliance docs you'll need.

We turn that list into a quote with MOQ, lead time, and plate treatment spelled out. You shouldn't have to chase a supplier for the number that should have been line one.

Why our setup works for small and large runs alike

We don't run one factory. We work with a network of 10+ certified partner factories — each holding CE, ISO, FDA, BRC, and food-contact-grade status. For every order we match the plant that fits your material, volume, and destination market.

What that means for you: a 500-piece digital test and a 50,000-piece gravure reorder both go to the right line instead of being forced into one. You can audit the factory, and you can talk directly to the production manager rather than relaying through three layers of sales. Samples are free, and we credit the sample cost into your order once you place it — so testing doesn't cost you twice.

Ready to spec yours?

Send the nine-point list above through our contact page and we'll return a quote with MOQ, lead time, and plate treatment on the first line — not the fifth. If you're still deciding on bag type, start with our stand-up pouch range or the aluminum foil bags built for barrier-sensitive products like coffee.
